Thoughtful Counseling & Clinical supervision

Befriend Your Parts. Lead from Self.

My Counseling Approach

I provide individual counseling for adults 18 and older navigating the impacts of trauma, life transitions, and the complexities of being human. My approach is grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Therapy is not about me telling you who you are or what you should do—it is a space for us to explore, with curiosity and compassion, what you have experienced, what you are carrying, and what you may need now.

My work is primarily informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), an approach that recognizes that we all have different “parts” of ourselves that have developed through our experiences and often work hard to protect us. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult thoughts, feelings, or responses, we can become curious about them, understand what they are trying to do for us, and build a different relationship with them.

I also integrate trauma-sensitive mindfulness, neuroscience, and creative forms of expression. We may talk, notice what is happening in your body, explore a part, use writing or other creative practices, or experiment with something entirely different. Everything we do—both during sessions and between them—is invitational. You always have choice in how you participate.

I believe our wellbeing cannot be separated from the lives we have lived or the worlds we live in. Together, we can consider not only what is happening within you, but also the relationships, family experiences, identities, communities, culture, environments, and systems that have shaped your story.

There is no single right way to do therapy. We begin where you are, follow the trailheads that emerge, and see where they lead.

My Supervision Approach

I work with associate professional clinical counselors, marriage and family therapists, and clinical social workers who need clinical supervision to reach full licensure in California. I believe supervision is the key to developing counselors’ full potential.  I strive to create a supervisory alliance rooted in trust, respect and open two-way communication with an emphasis on giving and receiving effective feedback.  I do not expect, nor do I intend, for supervisees to practice just like me. Instead, I hope to help each supervisee craft their unique way of helping clients.

As a clinical supervisor, I wear 3 hats: teacher, consultant, and counselor. Supervisees may need to practice using helping skills or writing case notes, in which I would wear the teacher hat. We may do role play, demos, and actually write notes together. Supervisees will bring specific client situations that may require consulting about best practices and potential resources to bring to their next session. Supervisees may also find that they have struggles with confidences and imposter syndrome. In these cases, I may wear the counselor hat to process with the supervisee about the ways self-doubt impacts their counseling work and seek to build confidence and resilience.

I also integrate concepts of Internal Family Systems into supervision through case conceptualization and strengthening counselor professional identity.  Ethics, advocacy and multicultural competencies are crucial elements in counseling and the supervisee will learn how to integrate these into their practice.
